What We Treat
Hormonal Health & Balance
Hormones are tricky! When hormones are at the perfect level and in balance, you feel great. The problem is finding that perfect balance. Menopause can be the best time of a woman’s life because the hormones are consistently low so replacing them with the perfect amount is easy.
Prior to menopause, there is a lot that can be done to help balance the hormones. My answer based on my previous conventional training was to take the pill–that will solve everything. Now, the focus is getting to the root cause of what is causing the hormonal imbalance in the first place.
It’s important to start with the adrenals. The sex hormones, estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone are made from cholesterol. Too much cholesterol is cause for concern, but so is too little cholesterol. Cholesterol is needed for optimal hormonal health. From cholesterol, all the sex hormones are made and so is cortisol, the survival hormone.
Under stress, the body deprioritizes sex hormone production in favor of cortisol production. It makes sense. Stress signals that the body is in danger. Of course, if forced to choose between survival and reproduction, survival is the priority. For this reason, sex hormones decrease. This leads to many different symptoms including moodiness, irritability, acne, difficulty losing weight, menstrual irregularities, hot flashes, and night sweats. Hormonal health is necessary for the brain to function optimally, have a healthy libido, and sustained energy throughout the day.
Why replace hormones? Replacing hormones (estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone) is important for many reasons. The most important being:
- Relief of symptoms → People feel better on hormones. They relieve hot flashes, improve mood and improve libido.
- Prevention of memory loss → Our brain needs hormones to function properly.
- Heart health → Natural, bioidentical hormones prescribed in the right amount are beneficial for your heart.
- Bone protection → Hormones keep our bones strong.
- Growth and repair → We heal quicker and feel younger when our hormones are balanced.
While it’s more complicated in women, optimal hormonal levels are the goal in both men and women. Want to know more about hormones? Fill out the form on this page to receive Dr. Libby’s “Everything You Need To Know About Hormones” PDF download.
