Around the age of 40, I noticed a shift in how I felt.
My weight wasn’t as easy to maintain as it had been in my younger years. Despite having a great life, I felt more irritable and moody than I had previously. Additionally, while I had the energy to do all the things I had to do, I wasn’t finding much left over to do the things I wanted to do in life. I was convinced something had to be off. I was putting a lot of effort into my health and expected to feel better than I was because of it.
I went in for a physical with my primary care doctor. I knew what to expect because I was a primary care doctor too. My doctor listened to my heart and lungs, looked in my ears and throat, checked my belly and reflexes, and ordered some labs.
Surely, it had to be my thyroid, I was thinking.
The labs were back the next day. I got the good news that everything was perfect and I was fine. While I was relieved that I didn’t have something terrible like cancer, I was disappointed they did not find anything so I could feel better. I guess my best years had passed me by and this was the new normal.
I knew I wasn’t alone because I saw women every day just like me. I believed them and when I did their workup, I hoped we would find something that could be fixed but we rarely did.
I got introduced to functional medicine then. I had never heard of it in my conventional training and thought if it was a valid approach, surely I would have. I was searching for an alternative solution for my daughter who was having stomach issues that we weren’t finding answers to via the conventional approach.
With an open mind, I signed up for a course offered through the IFM, The Institute of Functional Medicine. Within a matter of weeks, I had found the root cause of her problems that had stumped even the specialists and several weeks later it was fixed. My mind was blown! I began to wonder what else I’d been missing by strictly adhering to the conventional care model I had been trained in.
I applied what I learned in functional medicine to myself. Despite having a recent normal physical, I was shocked at all I was uncovering as I dug deeper and looked for root causes.
I identified issues with my adrenal glands, my gut, and my mitochondria. I fixed these issues one by one, and I changed my life. I’m on a mission to share what I’ve learned with others to help them get beyond the line of fine and shift from an okay life to an amazing life.
There are answers. The body is designed to feel amazing. When it doesn’t there’s a reason. Finding and fixing the root cause has been life-changing for me and for the patients I serve.
